Monsters and Moonshine is an Appalachian storytelling competition benefiting Mountain Valor, a veteran-led nonprofit serving veterans and their families across rural Southwest Virginia.

Storytellers take the stage for a 7 minute story pulled from true tales, strange creatures, and local legends. The winner is decided entirely by audience vote. Every ticket includes one vote, with additional votes available for $5 each. Cash prizes go to the top three storytellers of the night: $250 for first, $100 for second, $50 for third.

Dr. Cory Higgs of Virginia Tech Appalachian Studies opens the evening with a talk on Appalachian cryptids and why we tell monster stories in the first place.
