A: We are located at 251 Parkway Ln S in Floyd, Virginia.

Q: What ages do you serve?
A: We offer programs for all ages, from early childhood classes to teen theatre and adult workshops.

Classes & Programs

Q: How do I register for a class?
A: We have streamlined our registration process so that all required materials—including reduced tuition applications and any additional class-specific paperwork—can be completed through our website.

For those who prefer not to use the online form, paper applications are available on site. As we are a small staff of two, we ask that you please call or email ahead to schedule an appointment. You may reach us at (540) 745-6550 or programming@thejunebugcenter.com

Q: Who Teaches the Class?

A: June Bug Center classes are taught by highly trained instructors from across the New River Valley and beyond. All instructors are experienced in their disciplines, and many hold degrees from nationally respected institutions such as Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, Yale University, and The George Washington University, as well as internationally recognized programs including The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

Our instructors choose to teach at the June Bug Center because they are passionate about sharing their knowledge and mentoring the next generation of artists, performers, coders, and musicians.

Q: Do I need prior experience to join a class?
A: Not at all! Our classes are designed for both beginners and more experienced students.

Q: What should I bring to class?
A:
Most supplies are provided. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, instruments are available for students enrolled in Floyd JAMs and Blue Ridge Strings who do not already own their own instruments.

For dance classes, we are unable to provide dance shoes outside of those borrowed from other studios for recitals. However, we are pleased to offer costumes at no cost to families.

For theatre classes, families may be asked to loan items from home—such as clothing or accessories—for use as costumes or props. Participation in this process is completely optional. All loaned items are handled with care and returned by the final performance date.

Q: Can my child join a class late?
A: Late enrollment is sometimes possible, depending on the class and instructor. Please contact us directly to ask about availability. Please note that students who join any theatre class after the audition day (typically the second week of class) they will be placed in the ensemble.

Q: My student heard from a friend that auditions are happening today. Can they come audition?

A: We love the enthusiasm and interest in our programs, and we always welcome new students to the June Bug Center when space allows.

However, auditions held during class time for Musical Theatre for Kids, Drama Society, Musical Theatre for Teens, and Acting Out are part of a 12-week instructional program. These auditions are reserved for students who are officially enrolled, as families have committed both time and tuition to the full class experience.

For that reason, we are unable to accommodate auditions for students who are not currently registered in the class. If you’re interested in enrolling for a future session or would like to be notified about upcoming opportunities, we’d be happy to help—please feel free to reach out.

Q: Do you offer scholarships or financial aid?
A:
Yes. The June Bug Center is committed to making arts and STEAM education accessible to students throughout Floyd and the New River Valley. Currently, approximately one in four JBC students receives some form of tuition assistance.

We offer four tiers of tuition assistance based on household income, as well as a limited number of scholarships for prospective students. In addition, we are happy to work with families to arrange payment plans if paying the full tuition upfront presents a financial challenge.

Providing a safe, welcoming space for all students is central to our mission, and accessibility is a core reason we do the work we do.

Q: What is the Volunteer Exchange Program?

A: The Volunteer Exchange Program allows qualifying families to offset the cost of tuition through volunteer service. One hour of volunteer work equals one hour of free programming. For example, a full semester class (24 hours) may be covered by 24 hours of volunteer service, and two classes would require 48 volunteer hours (and so on and so forth).

Participation in the Volunteer Exchange Program is subject to eligibility and availability. When volunteer hours are used to reduce or cover tuition, they may not also be applied toward other programs or requirements, such as ACCE or National Honor Society service hours.

If you are interested in learning more about eligibility or available volunteer opportunities, please visit our Volunteer page.

Performances & Events

Q: How do I buy tickets for performances?
A: Tickets can be purchased online through our website or at the door (if available).

Q: Can I rent the space for an event?
A: Yes, our theater and studio spaces are available for rentals. Please visit our Rent Our Facility page for more information on our policies and to submit a request.

Policies

Q: What is your refund policy for classes?
A: Refunds are available up until the second class meeting. After that, we cannot issue refunds.

Q: What happens if a class is canceled due to weather?
A: We follow the Floyd County Public Schools weather closure policy. Make-up classes will be scheduled if possible.

Q: Are parents allowed to sit in during classes?
A:
Parents are welcome to remain in the lobby during class time, and many choose to do so. Parents may also observe classes as long as their presence does not become a distraction or interfere with instruction or student learning.

If a parent’s presence begins to impact the class environment, staff may ask them to observe from the lobby to ensure the best possible experience for all students.

Community Involvement

Q: How can I support The June Bug Center?
A: You can support us by attending performances, volunteering, donating, or becoming a sponsor.

Q: Do you accept volunteers?
A: Absolutely! We welcome volunteers to help with events, classes, and behind-the-scenes work. Volunteer hours can be applied to ACCE, National Honor Society, and more.
