Improv for Kids is a high-energy, creativity-boosting class where students learn to think on their feet and trust their instincts. Through classic improv games, character-building activities, and group storytelling, young performers develop confidence, communication skills, and teamwork. Each week, students explore new ways to express themselves, support scene partners, and say “yes, and!” in both performance and life. This class is perfect for kids who love to be silly, try new things, and build friendships in a fun, supportive environment. Cuban Dance with Nilda Guerra 📅 Wednesdays, September 17 – October 29 🕡 6:30–8:30pm 💲 $20 per class, or $140 for all 7 Join internationally acclaimed Cuban choreographer Nilda Guerra for a vibrant 7-week exploration of Cuban dance right here at The June Bug Center. Whether you’re a lifelong lover of Latin dance, a beginner looking to try something new, or simply someone who loves to move, this series will immerse you in the rhythms and culture of Cuba. Throughout the classes, Nilda will guide participants through a variety of Cuban dance and music styles—from the soulful Son and romantic Bolero, to the lively Mambo, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, and of course, Salsa. More than just steps, you’ll gain an appreciation for the rich cultural traditions that shaped these dances. ✨ Come ready for good fun, great music, and the joy of dance with one of Cuba’s most talented and dynamic instructors. About Nilda Guerra: Nilda Guerra has lived and breathed in that artistic and cultural milieu her entire life, studying at the prestigious Escuela Vocational de Arte and performing in various dance companies in Cuba and on tour abroad, before taking up her true passion, choreography. She fulfilled her dream of creating her own independent dance company in 2001 with the formation of Ballet Rakatan, a multi genre company that features in its productions the complex fusion of all manner of Cuban dance and music. In its 24 years of existence Ballet Rakatan has toured the world, performing to highest acclaim to packed houses in the most prestigious of theaters from City Center on Broadway, to Saddler’s Wells in the West End London, to La Scala in Milan and The Sydney Opera House among many many others. She takes immense pride in being a defender of her cultural heritage through the productions she creates and through the teaching of the complex skills involved in Cuban dance to talented young dancers who desire to follow in her footsteps at a school of dance in Havana sponsored by the company.

Floyd JAM allows students to choose from a list of instruments to learn on: fiddle, guitar, or banjo. All instruments are provided to enrolled students, which is included in the program tuition. Floyd JAM follows the “JAM program model,” which is to provide children with opportunities not only in learning traditional music, but to also perform in small and large groups. Camp Schedule: Each camp runs for one week and meets 3 hours per day. Snack Break: There is a 20-minute snack break at the halfway point each day. Snacks are generously provided by Feeding Southwest Virginia. Because of this partnership, options are limited—students with dietary restrictions are encouraged to bring their own snack if needed. Pick-Up Policy: A parent or approved pickup person must come inside to pick up their student. Alternate arrangements must be made in advance with the program coordinator and require a signed note. Stay Hydrated: It’s summer and it’s hot! ☀️ Students are encouraged to bring a personal water bottle each day. Held every Friday from 3:30 to 5:30, Drama Society is designed for teens who want to dive deeper into the world of theatre—onstage or backstage. This class explores the foundations of theatre while giving students hands-on experience in a variety of theatrical disciplines. Throughout the session, students will study acting, explore different genres and styles, and learn essential behind-the-scenes skills including stagehand work, costume design, stage makeup, and basic set construction. This fall, Drama Society will produce Anne of Green Gables by Donna Hoke— adapted from L.M. Montgomery's beloved story of an imaginative, fiercely determined girl who finds her place in the world. At the end of the session, students will either perform in the production or serve on the crew, choosing the path that best matches their interests. Drama Society is a true catch-all for aspiring theatre students, offering a welcoming space to discover their strengths and build confidence. Ever wondered what it takes to report the stories that shape your community? In Teen Newsroom, students will step into the role of real journalists, learning the fundamentals of reporting, interviewing, fact-checking, news writing, photography, and media ethics from a professional journalist and special guest speakers from the field. Throughout this 12-week course, students will explore the responsibilities of the press, develop critical thinking skills, and gain hands-on experience covering stories that matter. Along the way, they'll build confidence as writers, researchers, and communicators while learning how to identify credible sources and report with accuracy and integrity. The semester culminates in a special publication produced in partnership with the Floyd Times, giving students the opportunity to see their work shared with the community. Held every Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30, students will play Dungeons & Dragons in a world entirely of their own making. The group will collaborate on building that world first — mapping its geography, developing its cultures and history, and fleshing out the places their characters come from. Each student will create a fully realized character with a backstory, personal motivations, and a defined look and style. When the campaign begins, students will bring those characters to life through roleplay and improvisation, navigating challenges and shaping the story through every decision they make. An enriching program for little ears and caregivers, JBC Little Ear Worms is a course for the little ones in our community and their parents to learn singing, movement, storytelling, and instrument playing using fun creative music activities. This 45 minute class is a wonderful parent/guardian and child bonding experience while meeting friends and creating lifelong connections! This course is for little bugs aged 1 years old to 5 years old and parents/guardians of any age! The parent/guardian registered with the student will be required to attend class as well. Class is held every Wednesday from 10:30am to 11:15am from March 1st to April 5th in our Black Box. A t-shirt will be provided for students and parents at the end of the course. Whether you're looking to gain confidence, be more spontaneous, learn about improv, or simply have fun, this 8-week class is for you. You'll learn hands-on exercises that will encourage you to think on your feet and sharpen your wit. The class is sure to be filled with laughter and positivity. No experience necessary; Ages 18+

Held every Monday from 3:30 to 5:30, this upbeat and welcoming class introduces students ages 8–14 to the foundational techniques of ballet while adding the fun and flair of jazz choreography. Whether your dancer is brand new or has a little experience, this class is perfect for building confidence, coordination, and creativity. Students will learn proper ballet vocabulary, posture, and technique alongside the energetic rhythms and expressive movements of jazz. Our supportive environment encourages self-esteem, teamwork, and a strong work ethic—all while making new friends and having fun! Dress Code: Snug-fitting athletic clothing is recommended. Ballet or jazz shoes are encouraged but not required. Hair should be pulled back into a ponytail or bun to help dancers stay focused.
