Stagecraft: Writing for the Stage
Ages 13-18

Service Description
In this playwriting class, students will explore the craft of storytelling through one essential idea: character is plot. By studying the modern “ancient text” of Napoleon Dynamite, we’ll examine how unforgettable characters drive story—even when the stakes seem small and the world feels wonderfully ordinary. Students will learn how to tell a complete story within a limited space, where every moment must be carried through dialogue and action. How do you reveal character without long explanations? How do you build momentum without explosions or special effects? How does subtext shape a scene? Through writing exercises, scene workshops, and collaborative discussion, students will develop original short plays that showcase strong characters, clear objectives, and dynamic dialogue. Led by Samantha Oty, award-winning playwright and award-nominated screenwriter, this class is perfect for young writers ready to sharpen their storytelling skills and bring bold, character-driven stories to life on the page and stage.
